A YOUNG woman escaped with some bruising and a cut finger after plunging 40ft into a disused slate quarry at the weekend.

Fourteen members of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were called just after 4pm on Saturday to Ash Gill quarry, above Torver.

Unable to get out of the quarry, she was helped by a team member and then taken back to her lodgings.

That call came just as the team had finished another incident.

Twelve of its members were called out just before 2pm to climber who had fallen while climbing Abraham’s route on Dow Crag.

Fortunately for the casualty, members of RAF Leeming MRT were on exercise on the crag and were able to make the casualty safe and treat him for leg and arm injuries whilst CMRT members made their way up to help.

An RAF SAR Sea King was deployed from RAF Boulmer and flew the patient to Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle.
