POWERBOATERS descended on Windermere at the weekend to keep the area's rich boating heritage alive.

Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club has been racing on England’s longest lake since 1926 and opposite its Broad Leys club house since 1952 - but racing was stopped when the 10nmph limit came into force in 2005.

In 2013 and 2014 it was granted an exemption by the Lake District National Park Authority to break the limit - and the club held its first of two events planned for this year on Saturday.

Philip Fairhurst, commodore of Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club, said: "The day went very well. It was good weather if a little windy. There was great co-ordination with other boating clubs on the lake including the Royal Windermere Yacht Club."

In total 12 boats raced throughout the day across several classes.

The next event will be held on September 26.
