MORE than 50 elderly people enjoyed taking part in the 'Young at Heart Fun Olympics' held for the third time at Kendal Leisure Centre.

The free event run for people aged 50 and over involves participants taking part in a wide range of activities including a table tennis tournament and darts competition along with team games including indoor curling and boccia.

There was also non-competitive sports available throughout the day such as indoor bowls, badminton, giant Jenga and penalty shoot out.

After a free lunch to keep energy levels high there were more sedate and social events to take part in including dominoes and bingo.

Staff at the leisure centre were helped by volunteers from Kirkbie Kendal School and Age UK who helped the day to run smoothly.

For those looking to get some early training in for tnext year's event, there are 'Young at heart’ sessions at the leisure centre every Wednesday from 1pm to 2.30pm.

"Overall, it was a brilliant example that sport is available to be enjoyed by everyone, and it seems that the competitive edge is never lost," Rory Addison, the leisure centre's Community Sports and Activity Leader.
