MORECAMBE and Lunesdale MP David Marris has sought assurances from the Government that it will give support to self-employed people who are currently waiting for payment by Greek companies.

The messages came from the self-employment ambassador to the Government as a credit control crisis facing the Mediterranean country is mounting.

MORE TOP STORIES: Speaking during the urgent statement this week, Mr Morris said: "Mr Speaker, as self-employment ambassador to the Government I have had a lot of people texting me during this statement. What they are worried about is late payment from businesses in Greece and more to the point draconian steps from the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Could the Chancellor re-iterate his steps to help small enterprises to flourish in respect of getting paid quicker?"

In response Chancellor George Osborne said: "Let me reiterate that HMRC is ready to operate the time to pay scheme to help both those who are self-employed and small businesses and indeed larger firms who have problems because they are in some kind of transaction with a Greek company and have been caught up in the Greek Government’s capital controls."
