AN EDEN castle steeped in history has opened its gates to the public for the first time for more than a decade.

Dating back to the 12th century, Appleby Castle is a Cumbrian gem which boasts one of the few remaining Norman keeps.

And this summer the veil is being lifted to allow curious crowds the chance to explore the grounds, mansion house and keep, named Caesar's Tower.

Included in the ancient fortress's offerings this summer are open-air productions of Shakespeare's comedies Much Ado About Nothing and Twelfth Night - available for tourists and schoolchildren to enjoy starting tonight (July 2).

Sally Nightingale, owner of Appleby Castle said: "Our children should be able to experience Shakespeare’s plays, not just study a book in a classroom.

"They were written as entertainment and spectacle, meant to be enjoyed."

As well as showcasing the Bard's works against the castle's dramatic backdrop, there are a whole range of activities for everyone from families to history lovers to take part in.

Visitors can discover the Great Hall, climb a medieval staircase in the round tower and get a sneak peek at the state bedroom in tours of the castle which has been lived in since it was built.

There is even the opportunity to go on a ghost hunt as part of a paranormal investigation or observe the drama at a historical re-enactment.

Interactive falconry events, put on by Silverband Falconry, of Kirkby Thore, and wildlife walks in the grounds are also on the cards at the landmark site which overlooks the River Eden.

Although Mrs Nightingale opened for a few months in the summer of last year, and autumn of 2013, the castle was last officially open to the public in 2004.

"I think that Appleby Castle is a part of everyone’s heritage," she said. "I would like Appleby Castle to become the cultural and heritage centre in the North of England, attracting people from far and wide. It is close to the hearts of many and needs people and their energy to bring it back to life and realise it's a living history."

Appleby Mayor Cllr Hugh Potts said: "I think it's ideal for the town that the castle opens as it's the main tourist attraction in the area - long may it survive and expand."
