SOME of the National Trust’s most beautiful places across the Lake District have been providing the back-drop for the new big-screen feature film adaptation of Swallows & Amazons.

Author Arthur Ransome got his inspiration for the original stories in the landscapes and waters of South Lakeland and many scenes from the upcoming film are being shot there, including in Coniston, as well as on Derwentwater.

National Trust rangers, marketing staff, managers, estate teams and tenants have all been involved in the exciting process from the beginning by helping producers find the best places to shoot their film - then ensuring that the crew did not damage the wonderful natural environment or interrupt visitors' enjoyment of the Lakes.

John Moffat, general manager for the charity in the South Lakes, said: "We’re really lucky to have been part of this film. It’s such a classic childhood story - one of my personal favourites - and one reason so many people now visit the Coniston area. Secret Harbour Productions choosing to film in our part of the Lakes reminds visitors how wonderful it is and helps us to continue to look after it for everyone to enjoy."

Penny Webb, lead ranger for the North Lakes, added: "Of course we’re looking forward to watching our patch on the big screen. Summer’s a busy time of year and having a film crew is always an exciting challenge but the crew were really professional. I just hope it inspires others to get out on the water."

The much loved story is based around a summer’s tale of the adventures of six children on and off the water.

The film stars Rafe Spall as the enigmatic Jim Turner, alongside Kelly Macdonald as Mrs Walker, Andrew Scott as Lazlow, Jessica Hynes as Mrs Jackson and Harry Enfield as Mr Jackson.

The Walker and Blackett children from the beloved story will be brought to life in this adaptation by young breakthrough stars, including: Dane Hughes as John Walker, Orla Hill as Susan Walker, Teddie-Rose Malleson-Allen as Tatty Walker, Bobby McCulloch as Roger Walker, Seren Hawkes as Nancy and Hannah Jayne Thorp as Peggy Blackett.

It will be released in the UK by StudioCanal next year.
