HACKERS are believed to have gained access to newly-elected Liberal Democrat Leader Tim Farron's Twitter account.

Mr Farron said he was launching an investigation after what he described as a 'fake and malicious message' stating that homosexuality could be cured was sent from his social media account in the early hours of Friday, July 24.

The British Humanists Association tweeted what they called a 'shocking' finding that 'huge proportions of health workers in the UK believe homosexuality is curable'.

A reply, which purported to be from Mr Farron's account, stated: "They can be. Most sexual disorientation is caused by chemical leaching...check out fish and frogs" - a message the Milnthorpe-based politician strenuously denies came from him.

He later tweeted: "I am investigating after a fake and malicious tweet appeared to be posted from my account this evening. I apologise for any offence caused."
