POLICE are investigating after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in Ulverston town centre.

A male is believed to have walked up to the girl and touched her inappropriately over her clothing without her permission, leaving her 'shaken and distressed', according to police.

The incident occurred between 11.50pm on July 18 and 1.30am on July 19 at a premises on Market Street.

PC Matt Noden said: “We understand that following the incident the girl left the premises and spoke to four males with North East or Carlisle accents and told them what happened.

"We are keen to speak to these males as they may have information that could be vital for our investigation. It is thought they may have been drinking in Piel Castle pub earlier that night.

“We treat any reports of inappropriate sexual behaviour very seriously, and we are working hard to establish what exactly has happened. Anyone who can help our investigation should get in touch as soon as possible.”
