A 21-year old Ulverston man has been airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after a 'serious' road traffic collision.

The four-car pile-up occurred at 4.40pm on Monday, July 27 on the A66 near West Layton.

The serously injured Ulverston man was driving a blue Vauxhall Corsa at the time of the incident and was airlifted to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, from the scene.

A 32-year-old woman from the Richmond area was also involved.

She was driving a black Ford C-Max and was checked by ambulance crews at the roadside but did not need to go to hospital.

The driver of the White VW Crafter Pick-up, a 42 year old man from Wakefield, was also uninjured and checked at the roadside by paramedics.  

The road was closed for four hours whilst the scene was examined and the vehicles recovered.
