VILLAGERS enjoyed a grand day out at Beetham Sports where a new senior fell race record was set by Helm Hill runner Mark Addison.

The annual village sports featured adults' and children's races, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, donkey rides and traditional sideshows such as welly throwing, coconut shy and fancy dress.

Chris Merckel, who has been setting up the famous fell race for more than 20 years, praised the hard work and community spirit put in by village volunteers to make Beetham Sports such a success. "It was a good day and the field looked brilliant," he said.

The event attracted 400 to 500 people, estimated committee chairman Simon Greenwood, and it also made "a very good profit". Proceeds will be ploughed back into the village community.

In the senior fell race, Mark Addison, of Kendal club Helm Hill, clocked 34 minutes 48 seconds, to slice 29 seconds off the previous record set by Kendal's Craig Roberts.

Mark also won the event last year and in 2009, and Saturday's 5.8-mile race saw him build up a healthy lead on the run through the Dallam estate parkland.

Craig Roberts placed second in a time of 36-36 after shaking off Helm Hill’s Tom Tipping (37-34) on the final climb through the woods leading to the Fairy Steps. The first woman was South Yorkshire’s Kim Baxter who was 26th overall in 46-43. There were 84 finishers.
