WORLD War Two veterans are set to gather in Carlisle Cathedral for a special service marking the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day and the end of hostilities.

The service of thanksgiving, reflection and remembrance on Saturday August 15 follows an approach to the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral by the Royal British Legion (RBL) in Cumbria.

The Dean of Carlisle, the Very Rev Mark Boyling, said: “The service provides an important opportunity to worship God and remember all those who fought for their country and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“We are delighted that veterans will attend and we also hope to see as many other people as possible come together to mark this important anniversary.

“While the dark days of World War Two are now part of our history, we still live in a world beset by conflict. This time of thanksgiving, reflection and remembrance will provide the chance for collective prayers of peace.”

Nationally, the RBL in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence will lead the commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of VJ Day and the end of World War Two.

The British Legion in Cumbria has located a number of World War Two veterans from all three services and the Women’s Land Army who will attend, but would still like to locate others.

Eddy Dixon, the County Chairman of the RBL, said: “For many of the World War Two veterans, this will possibly be the last opportunity for them to participate in a major anniversary of the Second World War.

“We therefore wish to honour their contribution to securing the peace and freedom which we have enjoyed as a result of their efforts 70 years ago; at the same time, remembering and giving thanks to all those who gave their lives and have died since.”

The service will be led by Canon Jan Kearton, the Canon Warden of the Cathedral, and will be attended by the Lord Lieutenant Mrs Claire Hensman who will meet all the veterans at the end of the service.

Members of the public are welcome and everyone should be seated by 5.15pm, with the service starting at 5.30pm.
