The deluge also caused flooding at White Scar Cave at 6.30pm. Nobody was in the cave system at the time.

The heavy localised rain around the west of Ingleborough also caused problems for members of the Cave Rescue Organisation, based in Clapham, in getting to a cave callout at Ribblehead.

The team said: "White Scar cave suffered severe flooding for the first time in two years, forcing a change of venue for the casualty evacuation training that was due to take place there."
