FELL running and fancy underwear - Ambleside Sports has sprung into action on a glorious sun-soaked day.

Hundreds of spectators are packed around the arena, which has had fly-overs from classic military planes, to see a full programme of sporting events.

The showcase event, the Rydal Round - a nine-mile endurance test across steep inclines and rough terrain - was won by 47-year-old Phil Davis from Newby.

He described it as 'a proper fell race' and was 'delighted' with his performance.

Cycling, athletics and the crowd-favourite Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling are all under way.
