A LAKE District vicar is to become the new chaplain for the Bishop of Carlisle.

The Rev Canon Cameron Butland, the rector of St Oswald’s Parish Church, Grasmere, vicar of St Mary’s, Rydal, and chaplain of Rydal Hall will take up the role in October.

It follows an announcement, in May, that the current bishop’s chaplain, the Ven George Howe, is to retire on September 30 after 40 years’ ministering in the north of England.

Mr Butland will move later this year to be closer to Bishop’s House in Keswick, where he will work.

“This has come as a great surprise but at the same time I am delighted and feel that a great trust is being placed in me," he said. "I look forward to working with others and supporting the vision and strategy of the diocese."
