A TEENAGED motorist performed a potentially fatal driving move while being followed by an unmarked police car, a court heard.

Martin Atkinson, 18, overtook a vehicle on the brow of a hill in darkness near Endmoor on the night of May 9. A police officer travelling behind Atkinson's Volkswagen Polo also saw him travel at around 90mph on the A65, and then at twice the speed limit in a 40mph zone.

Atkinson, of Brackenspot House, Crook, near Kendal, had a female passenger in his car at the time.

Having pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving, he was sentenced by Judge Paul Batty QC at Carlisle Crown Court today.

Atkinson was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for a year.

Judge Batty told the teenager of his overtaking move: "Had there been a vehicle coming the other way there would have been a head-on collision and you would have been dispatched to eternity.

"It would have been a terrible, fatal crash and you would have been totally responsible."
