THE 132nd Cartmel Show proved that the village has firmly established itself as 'a foodie destination', according to this year's President Keith McClure.

Mr McClure told a crowd of thousands yesterday that the trade stands "bear witness to the fact that Cartmel is firmly on the map for its food and drink."

Visitors were treated to a range of food exhibitors including Cartmel Cheeses, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding and Grange-over-Sands chocolatiers Choco Lori, who were named best stand in the food tent.

Among the many new additions to the show this year were archery, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, and the welcome return of the show jumping section after a number of years.

It was also a 'very successful year' for the newly-introduced British Show Ponies classes (BSPS), according to show secretary Sarah Dickinson, who praised the 'very good quality' of entries.

"We also have a trail of funky sheep for kids to follow, which we're hoping to build on, year on year, by putting on more educational things."

It was a record year for the village industries tent, which saw entries jump from 711 last year to 1,060.

Village Industries Secretary Christine Knipe said the increase was largely down to a rise in the children's classes and support from local schools.

Best overall exhibit in village industries went to 20-year-old Robbie Hutchinson, from Levens, with a beautiful handcrafted wheelbarrow - the first time the prize has been won by a man.

Gavin Inman, of J.D. Inman & Sons at Strickland Hall, Witherslack, picked up the prize for overall champion sheep with a mule gimmer lamb.

It was Mr Inman's first time taking home the title after 10 years of showing at Cartmel.

On what the judges saw in the winning sheep, Mr Inman said: "She's a very correct sheep, with style and presence."

Alan Myerscough, of Sea View, Pennington, won two top prizes in the cattle section - best Limousin exhibit and champion pedigree beef.

John Langhorm, who picked up the prizes, said the standard of cattle was "as good as it's been for a long time, and as good as you'll find anywhere."

Meanwhile, Charlotte Sharphouse, of Old Hall Farm in Bouth, was thrilled to win best agricultural working horse and best feet with five-year-old pure bred Shire horse Skye.

"Normally she's a working horse so this is a day off," said Charlotte. "I think it was her presence in the ring today that won the judges over."
