A SCOTTISH family has been left "overwhelmed" by the generosity of a South Lakeland guesthouse owner who stepped in when their spring holiday took a tumble, reports Lisa Higginson.
Jane and Andrew Combe spent two nights with their sons at Crook Howe Bed and Breakfast, at Whinfell, after travelling from their Scottish Borders home and, while enjoying the hospitality of owner Doreen Jenkinson, they decided to stay an extra night.
But on the third day, Mr and Mrs Combe's three-year-old son, Brodie, fractured his skull after falling in Kendal town centre and he was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, leaving the family shocked and upset.
"We were told Brodie had to stay in hospital for a few days and I needed to stay with him," said Mrs Combe."So my husband and eldest son, Ethan, were going to have to go back to Scotland as it was our last night and money was low."
But Mrs Jenkinson insisted that Mr Combe and Ethan stayed with her until Brodie was released from hospital and, as well as providing Mr Combe and Ethan with a full breakfast each day, Mrs Jenkinson also extended the arm of generosity to washing and ironing their limited supply of clothes.
Mrs Jenkinson inisted they stay free of charge until Mrs Combe and Brodie got out of hospital. "We were overwhelmed by the generosity she and her husband showed us. In this day and age things like that don't happen," said a relieved Mrs Combe.
