A CUMBRIAN man who set fire to a bed while his wife and three young children were inside the house has been jailed.

Thomas Galloway, aged 22, has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting arson with intent to endanger life.

Police were called to a house fire at a property on Thomas Street, Carlisle, at 5am on April 17 this year.

Following an investigation it was established that Galloway, of Thomas Street, Carlisle, set fire to a bed inside the property while his wife and three young children were at home.

No one was injured, however extensive damage was caused to the property.

DC Fiona Murray, of Cumbria Police, said: “Galloway knowingly put the lives of his wife and children in danger due to his actions.

"Thankfully no one was hurt, however this incident could have easily ended in tragedy. Justice has been served today, and I hope it gives the victims the opportunity to move on with their lives.”

Galloway was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court, after pleading guilty at a hearing in July.

He was also sentenced to pay a victim surcharge of £120, and a court charge of £900.
