RESIDENTS and visitors are being called to help boost the Lake District’s World Heritage Bid and set a world record at the same time.

Earlier this year eight South Lakeland schools put pen to paper to write the world's longest letter with heartfelt messages about their love of the local area.

Now members of the public can add to their own contribution the letter by visiting The Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole and writing a message of support for the region’s UNESCO World Heritage Bid.

Rolls of paper from Burneside-based James Cropper Paper have been installed amongst an exhibition of messages from the various schools.

The letter, installed on reels to allow for quick and easy signing, will be at Brockhole for around two months, before staff from both the visitor centre and James Cropper Paper get down to the business of measuring the final letter in September.

Chris Brown, Commercial Director at James Cropper said “We started the attempt during National Stationery Week to remind people of the simple pleasure of writing a letter, and achieving a World Record would certainly be a wonderful finale to this community project.

“The school children have done a fantastic job so far, so now it’s over to visitors of all ages to our home in the Lake District National Park to add their own messages of support.”
