After a gloriously fine morning the Kendal district on Sunday afternoon was visited by a heavy thunderstorm, accompanied by torrential rain. In the town three-quarters of an inch of rain fell. At the military camp on Longlands great discomfort was felt, the water being a foot deep in some places.

A perfect day drew a big crowd estimated at 11,000 to Grasmere Sports, and they became fortunate witnesses to the feat of 40-year-old Caldbeck shepherd Bill Teasdale in winning the gruelling guides race for the tenth time and shattering the eight-years-old record, His time was 13 minutes and five seconds.
25 YEARS AGO
Ambitious plans to site a £2.6 million theatre in Bowness fell at the financial hurdle when they were discussed at a crucial meeting. Members of South Lakeland District Council's leisure and tourism committee said that although the concept of a theatre in Windermere or Bowness was appealing it could not afford £1 million support at a time when the squeeze was on financially.
