AN EDEN show in its 127th year has been hailed a success by those who attended and also online.

Dozens took to social media to praise the growing Brough Agricultural Show, held at Kaber, near Kirkby Stephen, despite a wet start to proceedings.

Show secretary David Prince said: "After a damp start the sun came out and it was very good. All of the feedback I've had, especially on Facebook, has been very positive. Everyone seemed to be happy.

"Although not a huge amount, sheep entries were up, which is positive and I'm going to work on that for next year."

And poultry entries experienced a hike to 170 after last year's figure of 130.

In the sheep classes, the supreme champion was awarded to Tom Buckle, K&R Buckle, of Barras, with his Beltex gimmer shearling - bred at home and on its first outing.

Joint supreme reserve champion was handed to Tom’s brother Jack, with his Blue Faced Leicester gimmer shearling, and Stan and Pat Brogden, of Hellbeck, with their champion Swaledale two shear ewe.

In the equestrian section, Sofia Tighe, of Chester-le-Street, took champion in the fell ponies while top veteran went to Forest Gump, shown by Elizabeth Butterworth, of Bolton, and top Dales pony was awarded to Westwick Polly D & A Eccles, of Middleton in Teesdale.

In the children’s riding pony classes, Teagan Wood, with Couling Wood Walnut, won champion silver cup while C. Nixon with The Gaffer took the coloured’s champion cup.

And the champion in the poultry tent was a Barred Plymouth Rock Bantam Cockerel entered by Tom Newbould, of Crosby Garrett.

Speaking on the rise in poultry numbers, Mr Prince added: "A lot more people keep poultry because it's fairly easy to look after them as you don't need the field you would need for a pony - that's my view."

With trade stands up more than 50 per cent on 2014, there was plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Mr Prince attributed the growth to social media 'spreading the word' and his work to engage with businesses.

There was also an 'exceptional' number of dogs entered on the day this year, with the top title going to Jack shown by Shannah Armstrong while the sticks champion was B. Lucas.
