SOUTH Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on residents in the Haverthwaite area to have their say over proposed safety improvements to the A590 in the area.

The Gazette reported is last week's edition that radical changes could be made to the road layout in that area due to growing safety fears.

Many residents find the junction at the railway station difficult to use – especially when turning right – and some drive miles round to avoid the junction. Fast moving traffic also makes it difficult for people to cross the road and for buses to pull in and back out again.

Tim Farron is campaigning for safety improvements to the A590, and local district and county councillor Sue Sanderson has worked with parish councils and residents to convince Highways England to put this proposal together.

Highways England is now staging a public exhibition on Tuesday 15 September at Outback Hall, Leven Valley Primary School from 2:30pm to 7pm.

Tim said: “I am urging people to go along and make their views known. "The A590 divides our communities in an area of increasing local housing and tourist attractions. The speed and volume of traffic on the road creates considerable hazards particularly for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles that have to access the local villages and hamlets.

"I hope that we are another step closer in our long running campaign to improve safety on the A590.”

Cllr Sanderson added: “Many local residents have told me they find it difficult to use this junction, and that traffic travels too fast - some even drive all the way up Brow Edge and back down to avoid it. MORE TOP STORIES: "Hopefully these proposals will improve the junction for everyone - but I’m keen that local residents see the plans for themselves on 15 September and have their say.”
