HUNDREDS turned out to enjoy a 'friendly and popular' Eden agricultural show at the weekend.

Around 2,000 made their way to Dufton, near Appleby, on Saturday for the annual event which was in its 151st year.

Show secretary John Hughes said: "It’s a very friendly and popular show in one of the most beautiful local settings. We had about 2,000 people attend and had a very positive feedback."

Unlike many shows in the county this season which have seen rises in sheep entries and a similar numbers of cattle entries to previous years, Dufton experienced the opposite.

"Contrary to what we’ve heard of other local shows, cattle classes were up on previous years, as were horse and showjumping classes," added Mr Hughes. "Sheep classes were about the same as other years and our industrial section was well supported, as it always is.

"All other classes were well supported and, overall, it was a very successful show."

Securing cattle champion was I and Finlay Soutter, of Brougham, with their Limousin cross which was entered into the haltered heifer of any breed class.

The supreme cattle winners also scooped commercial champion.

And impressing the judges with in sheep classes was S Collingwood, whose North of England Mule was crowned champion.

In the horse classes Lucy Jones came first in minor jumping for ponies with Nipna Flaming Katy while Clare Chappelhow secured first place in the British Novice first round championship with Crackenthorpe Wanikiy.

Amy Ion took the top title in discovery championship first round with Currabawn Cinderella and Margaret Kendall was named first in the senior newcomer championship first round class with Lachain Lass.

Among the competitions at the show were sheepdog trials, children's sports, vintage vehicles, dry stone walling and fell races.
