MANY friends and the extended family of Grange-over-Sands centenarian Norman Critchley gathered at the town's Methodist Hall to celebrate his landmark birthday.
Known in the town for his fondness of striding out, Mr Critchley used to complete a daily five mile walk until two or three years ago, which could well have contributed to his good health and longevity.
His route used to take him down Mail Street, up and down the promenade, over the fell and down the Meathop Road. He still takes two short walks every fine day.
Mr Critchley (pictured here with his telegram from the Queen) was joined by his son Geoffrey, three grandsons, their wives and partners at the celebration last Thursday.
Born and raised in Swinton, Mr Critchley fought with the Lancashire Fusiliers in Burma during World War 2.
He worked as a painter and decorator from the 1930s until his retirement in 1980. His wife, Dorothy, whom he married in 1947, passed away in 1989.
Mr Critchley moved to Grange 19 years ago to be near to his son's family.
