LOWICK and District Agricultural Society Annual Show is hoping for another well attended held event on Saturday, September 5. The show field can be found off the A5084, near Lowick Bridge, on the main Greenodd to Coniston road. A very traditional show with horses, livestock and home produce competitions, also featured are displays of local crafts, trade stands and children's entertainment, plus hill racing and hound trailing events, along with Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and pet and working sheep dog competitions. Following the show, the evening is rounded off with the popular Show Dance, with dancing to live music from 7.30pm, finishing at 1am. (Pictured 2014 winner of Best in Show).

AN EXHIBITION to commemorate the life and works of Sir David Lean CBE and the 70th anniversary of the filming of Brief Encounter is being held in the Bateman Gallery at Carnforth Station Heritage Centre. From Tuesday, September 8, the David Lean Film Season will start in the Furness and Midland Hall, with two showings at 11am and 1.30pm of the 1942 movie In Which We Serve (138 minutes).

SINCE the publication of her first novel A Necessary Fiction, in 2013, under the name Jane Emerssen, Judith Johnstone has given talks to a number of reading groups. Her next talk, on the perils of writing a sequel, will be at Kendal Library on Tuesday, September 8 (3pm). The sequel, A Plain and Simple Truth, came out in June. THE annual Sheepfest at Sedbergh begins on Saturday, September 12, and for those who haven’t entered then there is still time to attend one of the free workshops, taking place at the Methodist hall today (Thursday, September 3) and tomorrow (Friday, September 4), from 5.30pm-8.30pm; at Farfield Mill on Sunday (September 6) from 10.30am-4.30pm; and finally, at the People’s Hall on Monday, September 7 (5.30pm-8.30pm).

BORDERLINES book festival at Carlisle returns this week from today (Thursday) until Sunday (September 3-6), with more events in the main venues of Crown and Mitre Hotel, Tullie House, Carlisle Library, Carlisle Cathedral and Waterstones. Altogether, 35 talks and workshops, with high profile names as international humanitarian, Terry Waite, mountaineer, Simon Yates, broadcaster, Fiona Armstrong, and much-loved voice of radio, Charlotte Green, included.

GRIZEDALE is hosting the Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year 2015 exhibition until Monday, September 7. Included are photojournalist Esme Allen's Eden Restored - The Mesopotamian Marshes of Iraq, exhibited exclusively beneath the canopy of the world famous Grizedale Forest itself, and Uttam Kamati's pictures, which capture the work of humanitarian projects; both on show alongside the other category winners in Grizedale Visitor Centre.
