A TEN-year-old boy and his mum have cycled 200 kilometres around Morecambe Bay for CancerCare.

Robert and Ruth Porter have raised £560 for the charity by completing the recently opened Bay Cycle Way by mountain bike.

The pair cycled from Walney Island to Ulverston; on to Grange-over-Sands, including the famously steep climb over Bigland Hill; then to Silverdale and, finally, Glasson Dock.

Ruth, who runs a holiday cottage company, told the Gazette that Robert had been "a superstar" during her treatment for breast cancer two years ago.

She said how proud she and Robert's dad Barry, an IT project manager, were of his fundraising efforts, which began with making and selling loom bands last summer, raising £50 at Hawkshead Show.

"He wanted to do something off his own back," Ruth told the Gazette.

"I'm very proud of him. He was very mature about it when I was being treated, making cards and giving me teddy bears. It's made us all a stronger family unit."

Ruth added that she was now "feeling fine" and "fighting fit" after her surgery and chemotherapy.

Ambleside Primary School pupil Robert had originally hoped to raise £100 for CancerCare, which supports families in South Lakeland and north Lancashire, but he has so far hit £560 - and the Rotary Club is also to present him with a cheque for a further £130, said mum Ruth.
