CONISTON has played host to 11 visitors from the village's Italian twin community, Solto Collina.

The party arrived at Manchester Airport after flying from Bergamo near Milan on Thursday.

The following day the visitors toured Stott Park Bobbin Mill to acquaint them with the Lakes industrial history.

Other highlights included a ferry trip on Windermere, a 'wander' round Hawkshead and a meal at Coniston's new Indian restaurant, Sara's. The next day they sampled a typical English lunch at the village's Ship Inn. In the evening they experienced a traditional Jacob’s Join at Coniston Sports and Social Club.

Jackie Coe, secretary of the Coniston and District International Twinning Association, said: "Many people from the village came to join us and meet the Italian visitors, and we even managed to get a lot of them onto the dance floor."
