100 YEARS AGO A ROCHDALE motorist was fined £2 at Kendal on Saturday for driving a motor car through Staveley at a speed of more than ten miles an hour. The defendant, who said he did not know there was a speed limit in the village, was stated to have driven at a speed of more than 20 miles an hour.

50 YEARS AGO A BLOCKAGE in the fuel supply of his speed boat Miss Windermere IV, probably robbed Mr Norman Buckley of a new one-hour world water speed record on Lake Windermere on Saturday morning. The 57-year-old water speed ace later announced that he had called off the record attempt.

25 YEARS AGO BUSINESS was not so sweet last week for Mrs Joy Moore, owner of The Chocolate House on Branthwaite Brow, Kendal, who estimated she lost up to £600 in trade because of pedestrianisation work on Finkle Street. The situation was made worse on Thursday when a JCB parked in front of the shop window, reducing takings to a mere £59.
