In a civilised democracy it is completely unacceptable that an Ulverston town councillor should be shouted down by some other councillors for raising legitimate concerns on behalf of those who voted for him in an apparent attempt to silence any view that differs to their own (Gazette, September 24, '12 refugees could be housed in town').

Democracy is about the airing of alternative views and then arriving at an agreed consensus.

For Cllr Jane Harris to go as far as telling Norman Bishop-Rowe to 'shut up', is not only plainly insulting and demeaning to an elected representative speaking on behalf of constituents, but is an affront to open debate and adult discussion. She should apologise forthwith and all those who, as you report, "howled with derision", should hang their heads in shame.

May I remind Ulverston Town Council this is why this country fought in two world wars - defending the rights of Freedom of Speech and democracy.

On this evidence, where is the democracy and freedom of speech at Ulverston Town Council?

Just as it is entirely legitimate for communities to welcome refugees to the area, it is also entirely legitimate for people to feel unease. It is, after all, our money which will foot the bill to house, pay benefits, educate and support them.

Are we not entitled to a say? Is this not a discussion that needs to be properly and openly aired.
