A FURNESS family raised £8,512 for St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston after recreating a special journey.

Members of the Leech family paid tribute to their grandparents' Joyce and Ted's romance by cycling more than 100 miles from Ulverston to Salford.

As a young man Ted pedalled from Ulverston to Salford once every fortnight to visit Joyce Nuttall, who he had met while she was displaced during the Second World War.

Even the fact that the road signs had been removed to confuse potential Nazi invaders could not put Ted off as he covered around 13,000 miles over three years to see his sweetheart.

Their love blossomed and they went on to enjoy 65 years of marriage before passing away within three weeks of each other earlier this year.

The family had hoped to raise £5,000, but thanks to the strength of their story and generous donations, which came in from around the world, they well exceeded that sum and presented a cheque to the hospice on Sunday.

– coming in globally!

Joyce and Ted’s son, Ian said: “The story and the event just spiralled. The response has been brilliant.”
