Store Sheep

At Borderway Mart Harrison & Hetherington held their Weekly Sale of store and breeding sheep.

Store Sheep – Once again there was a good trade for all lots and a few new faces around the ring. Demand throughout was very strong from small running lambs to the big lambs. Topping the day was Messrs Horn, Birks Head, Appleby in Westmorland for the second week running peaking at £64 per head for a pen of Texel lambs.

Breeding Sheep – A larger show of quality ewes and gimmers was forward. Topping the sale was for a pen of mule shearling gimmers from Messrs Fearon, Fell View Farm who had a large consignment of 160 stock sheep and mule gimmers, seeing the top of £127.

There was also a strong demand for older ewes. This section topped at £118 for a pen of 16 Greyfaced ewes consigned by Messrs Wood of Hillfield, Brampton.

Crop

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of crop.

Round bales of Barley straw sold to £14 and £13 per bale. Mini hestons of Wheat straw sold to £65, £56 (x2) and £54 per tonne.

Borderway Monthly Dairy Day

Dairy Trade Remains Firm The Borderway Monthly Dairy Day is quickly becoming one of the best places in the UK for buyers to select top quality cows and heifers in milk. The October sale offered 131 animals with 96 freshly calved animals topping at £1750 to average just over £1400 for a 100% clearance. 35 In-calf heifers topped at £1500 to average £1265.

Topping the trade for the second consecutive month was an outstanding heifer consigned by Messrs R&A Harrison, Hazel Head Farm, Wigton selling for £1750 Brian and Craig Davidson from Errolston Farm, Gretna sold three powerful heifers topping at £1650 for a Cogent Twist daughter giving 33kg.

The Firm of Harvey, Drum Farm, Dumfries sold four excellent heifers topping at £1650 for a 36kg heifer.

M&G Struthers, Bankhead of Balcurvie sold seven heifers toping at £1580 for a milky heifer giving 40kg.

Topping the cow trade at £1500 was RM&N Wainwright, Castle Farm, Carlisle for a third calve cow giving 52kg. She was sired by Woodmarsh Metalic and bred from a VG87 dam that twice gave over 14,000kgs.

L Davidson & Sons, Halmyre Farm sold 6 very milk Ayrshire heifers topping at £1400 for a classy uddered heifer giving 34kg.

In-calf heifers were in demand and had a brisk trade topping at £1500 for a classy heifer sired by Premier-Kerndt Sailing consigned by E Moffitt & Son, Peepy Farm, Northumberland.

It is worth noting that bulling heifers have dropped in value in recent weeks and look exceptional value for money. There was 10 well grown Swedish cross Holstein heifers and British Friesian heifers on offer topping at £600 to average £532.

Borderway, Harrison and Hetherington held their sale of implements, tractors and small tools.

A large entry of implements, were presented to a good crowd of buyers from all parts of the UK, ensuring that all lots sold to well above the vendors expectations.

Also this day was the sale of vans on behalf of Mallison Fabrications Ltd, which topped at £3800 and £3500 for two Citroen Berlingo vans.
