AWARD-winning Ulverston saxophonist Jess Gillam spent the weekend filming a music video for “The Sky’s the Limit”, a piece written for her by renowned saxophonist and composer Barbara Thompson.

Barbara, one of the world’s most highly-regarded saxophonists and composers, and her husband, Jon Hiseman, came to the Lake District for three days with Asue Azar to film Jess playing the piece in various locations with stunning scenery.

Millions have heard Barbara’s music as she has written the music to the ITV Series “A Touch of Frost” as well as the theme to “The Southbank Show” and countless other television series. With her band Paraphernailia, she toured the world performing to huge crowds.

Barbara has appeared as a featured musician on more than 100 albums, is a founder member of the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble - 'The Band of Bandleaders' - and has worked with a huge variety of artists from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Manfred Mann.

In the early 1980s Barbara was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 to write a series of pieces and she chose to compose modern classical works which re-awakened her interest in classical music, both as a performer and more importantly as a composer. In 1996, Barbara was awarded the MBE for Services to Music. Her husband is one of the most renowned drummers of his generation as the founder of the band “Colosseum”.

Jess gave the world premiere of the piece Barbara wrote for her at the World Saxophone Congress in July in Strasbourg.

"Working with Barbara and Jon has been a truly inspirational experience – they are both so dedicated and passionate about what they do and really live and breathe music," said Jess, who has been awarded several scholarships and awards including the BBC Walter Todds Bursary for showing exceptional promise on BBC Young Musician of the Year. "Barbara has inspired me with her music since I was 12 and to now be working with her is quite a surreal experience!

"Eight years ago, Barbara was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and the way she continues, still composing and creating music, is quite unbelievable."

Barbara said: “It is a real treat to write a piece for such a talented young 17-year-old saxophonist, and I hope this will be the first of many collaborations,"

The video was filmed at various locations around Ulverston and the Lake District including Lakeside, Birkrigg Common, Gillam’s Tearoom and Market Street, Old Hall Road, Jenkin’s Crag and on the Lakeside Steamers.
