KENDAL Army Cadets achieved a number of successes at the Cumbria Army Cadet Force (ACF) annual military skills competition.

The competition, run by Major Willie Richards at Warcop Training Area, pits teams from around the county against each other in a range of stands including shooting, first aid, field craft, section attacks, stalking, patrolling, basha (shelter) building, physical training, range finding, general and military knowledge, drill and navigation.

The Kendal team won the patrolling and observation stand and were second in the section attack and military and general knowledge stands. Overall, the team came fourth in the tightly-fought competition, only three percent behind the overall winners of the combined team of Penrith, Brampton and Longtown detachments.

The Kendal team, led by Cadet Cpl Regan Wilson, 17, included Cadet Corporals James McLouglin, 17, and Jack Howson, 16, with Cadet Lance Corporals Hugh Law, 17, James Walton, 15, and Joseph Scott, 17, alongside Cadets Ollie Farrell, 14, Alex Ruston, 15, and Christopher Parkes, 16. Sergeant instructors Paul Kitching and Michael Anderson trained the team.

Colonel Anthony Steven, Commandant of Cumbria ACF said: “Kendal detachment are to be congratulated on their result. Our county skills competition is not only a good test of both leadership and teamwork, it is also a huge amount of fun for the cadets and adult volunteers. Every team who took part won at least one stand, which shows the breadth of talent within the organisation and the determination of the cadets to succeed.”
