UNIVERSITY officials have been left red faced after accidentally emailing details of a student's disciplinary procedure to every undergraduate.

At 3pm on Friday, October 30, an email summoning a Lancaster University student to a disciplinary hearing was sent to potentially thousands of fellow students.

The email outlines that the student is to appear at the hearing, scheduled for Friday, November 6, to face four charges of breaking university rules.

The allegations against the student include allowing 'unlawful visitors on campus', 'failure to identify oneself when required to do so by the head of security', 'causing unreasonable disturbance', 'an action which endangers the health and safety of another person', 'the damaging of buildings or property', 'any act not listed above which is an offence under English law' - according to university rules.

It is not yet known if the individual denies the allegations.

The email was sent out by the university's Deputy Dean Andrew Lucas, who hurriedly sent out another email asking students to delete the original message.

Students have reacted on social media to the email gaffe, with many promising to attend the student's disciplinary hearing, even starting a Facebook group which has 1,500 people saying they will be there in support of the student.

A statement from the University said: "All  members of staff are required to take information security and data protection training which includes guidance on the use of email.

"We are revisiting our procedures in light of this breach and an apology has been issued to the student."
