Store Cattle and Weanlings

Harrison & Hetherington had forward 953 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle at Borderway consisting of 633 Store Cattle, Bulls and weanlings, 309 Calves and 11 Dairy Cattle.

As more Autumnal weather sets in more cattle were on offer in every section, trade remains buoyant for all classes with quality short of requirements.

Store Cattle – A marvellous entry of 404 store cattle were forward whereby quality was short of requirements. Top overall was a superb Limousin heifer from Mr M Haigh, Breckonhill Farm, Hexham achieving £1290. Messrs WS & JM Dinsdale, High Field, Penrith sold a Limousin cross also and achieved £1270. Top overall steer was a Charolais cross from Messrs JB & SF Stainton, The Garth, Carlisle selling to £1250. Messrs Park, Baldwinholme Farm, Carlisle sold the top Limousin cross to £1245. Black and white looked sharper and easily sold. Top overall was a Holstein Friesian from Messrs TB Stamper & Sons, Harrot Hill Farm, Cockermouth selling to £1090. Calves

Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves.  A smaller show of 309 calves were forward with good quality, well reared beef bred calves were good to sell.  However, plainer calves were cheaper on the week.  Top price was £555 from Messrs SM & CM Bewley, The Garth, Tow Law for an excellent Limousin bull calf.  Young black and white calves were dearer than previous weeks although stronger calves were less money.

Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly commercial dairy sale. A larger show of dairy cattle was on offer, to a packed ringside of buyers ensuring trade maintained the recent high rates.

Primestock

At Borderway Mart on Monday 26th October, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.  Once again a larger entry of 486 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle forward.

Cast Cows, Bulls and OTM Cattle: A larger show of 376 cast cows and 8 stock bulls were presented to the usual large ring side of buyers with over 50 accounts active which insured that all classes of stock from well finished cows to feeding cows were well up on the week.

M/s Harrington, Hosket Hill farm sold the top priced Limousin x cow selling for 703kg 190.5p at £1339 bought by Jewitts. Kedzlie Farms, Galashiels run of outstanding and well finished cows topped at 183.5p for a Limousin x purchased by Sean McGimpsey. M/s Smith & Sons, East Greenridge, Hexham sold a Limousin x cow for 177.5p purchased by Jewitts.

M/s Warnock & Sons, Dreva Farm, Biggar sold the top overall priced Charolais cow selling for 989kg, 147.5p at £1458 bought by Pickstocks. M/s Eggleston, Thornham Hill Farm, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne also sold an outstanding Charolais cow selling for 905kg, 160.5p at £1452 purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Hewson, Burgh Head Farm sold a British Blue cow selling for 838kg, 167.5p at £1403 to Pickstocks. Kedzlie Farms Ltd run of cows topped at 851kg at 158.5p totalling £1348 to Mr Kirkpatrick.

Black and White cows were 10p up on the week for all classes. M/s Shepherd, Crownstone Farm sold the top priced Holstein x selling for 159.5p to Les Fell M/s Henderson & Son, The Gill Holstein x cows topped at 153.5p, 148.5p & 144.5p selling to Mr Seven Bowes and Mr Les Fell. M/s Morris, Greengate House, Lockerbie Holstein x cows topped at 148.5p bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Robinson of Newtown Farm sold the top overall priced Holstein x cow selling for 762kg at 144.5p totalling £1101 to Steven Bowes. M/s Reid , Bencall run of Holstein cows topped at 749kg at 137.5p totalling £1028 to Pickstocks. M/s Henderson & Son, The Gill Holstein topped at 660kg at 153.5p totalling £1013 selling again to Steven Bowes.

M/s Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold the top priced Limousin stock bull selling for 991kg at 126kg totalling £1276 to Cleveland Meats. M/s Herdman, Acton Farm, County Durham sold the top overall priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull selling for 1077kg at 118.5kg totalling £1276 to Cleveland Meats.

Prime bulls: A reduced entry of 64 prime bulls were forward with all classes dearer on the week. Top overall was a Limousin from M/s Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle selling to £1561.63. Top pence per Kilo of 215.5p was attained from M/s Mitchinson, Beckstones, Carlisle for a Limousin. Top overall Black and White was a Holstein Friesian from M/s Graves, Old Town Farm, Carlisle achieving £1254.49 and top pence per kilo of 189.5p was attained. Many more bulls are required to meet demand.

Prime Cattle:  A good entry of 53 prime steers and heifers were forward and sold dearer on the week. Top overall was a marvellous Charolais cross heifer from M/s Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont achieving £1718.25. Top steer was a super British Blue cross from M/s Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Wigton achieving £1682.83 both of the above purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 234.5p was attained by M/s Fawcett, Silver How, Seascale selling to Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle, M/s Walker, Elm tree, Appleby received 231.5p for yet another Limousin cross heifer selling to Alan Jarvis on behalf of a client. Top pence per kilo steer was a Blonde cross from m/s Crichton, Loughrigg selling to 223.5p and purchased again by Pioneer foods. More could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

Prime lambs: At the weekly sale of Prime lambs trade was slightly back on the week and an SQQ of 147ppk was achieved. A pen of Texel x Lambs topped the sale at £83.80 consigned by Mr PC Musgrave, Sowerby wood which sold to Mr Andrew Dawson. M/s Metcalfe, Low Fauld topped the sale per kilo at 200pk for a pen of Beltex lambs which sold to Mr Andrew Dawson.

Store and Breeding sheep

Including late season sale of Breeding Rams

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep.  

Store Sheep: A larger show of 1207 head of store lambs were forward, whereby demand for all classes was strong throughout, and trade was similar to last week. Topping the sale at £63 a head was a great quality pen of Beltex lambs consigned by Messrs Errington of Hunley Farm, Carlisle.

The highlight of the sale was 4 black ewe lambs which were kindly donated for sale from Messrs Grieve and Master Alfie Grieve both of Whiteside, Hexham in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance, which sold to a top of £100.

Breeding Sheep: The sale of store lambs was followed on with the Late Season Sale of breeding rams, which saw a selective demand throughout, though most rams finding news homes. Topping at £300 for a Texel lamb from Messrs W Storey of Woodhead Farm, Haltwhistle.

The breeding sheep sale also included a small show of females, which sold to a top price of £100 for a quality consignment for Suffolk shearling gimmers from Messrs J Duff & Sons of The Laythes, Wigton.

Round bales of Haylage sold to £11 per bale, Wheat straw to £11 per bales, Barley straw to £15 and £13 per bales and to £60 per tonne.

Mini hestons of Hay sold to £55 per tonne, and Wheat straw to £50 per tonne.
