AS FAR as saxophonists go they don't come much better than John Harle.

Regarded as one of the world's greatest musicians, he has performed at the BBC Last Night of the Proms, sold more than half a million records and has been nominated for Grammy and Mercury awards.

John is an Ivor Novello Award winning composer-performer and recent record releases include Art Music and The Tyburn Tree, both with singer Marc Almond of Soft Cell.

He's rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in the music business: for six years artistic director to Sir Paul McCartney, and producer and musical director for the likes of Herbie Hancock, Sir John Dankworth, Dame Cleo Laine, Lesley Garrett, Ute Lemper, Kathryn Tickell, and Stanley Myers to name but a few.

His album Terror and Magnificence featuring Elvis Costello, reached No 3 in the Classical Charts, and he's composed umpteen film and television scores, including the signature theme to BBC One’s Silent Witness and the epic score to Simon Schama’s television series The History of Britain. In the process he's landed two Royal Television society awards for best soundtrack and been awarded four BBC Proms commissions.

On Friday, November 13 (7.30pm), John performs at Ulverston's Coronation Hall, a gig staged by young rising sax star Jess Gillam.

A extremely talented player herself, 17-year-old Jess is shaping up to be a force to reckon with and was awarded the BBC Walter Todds Bursary for showing exceptional promise on BBC Young Musician of the Year last year. Born and brought up in Ulverston, Jess was the youngest of 2,600 delegates to perform at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg recently.

As well as having a passion for performance, she also has an interest in promoting live music and has been running an annual concert series in her hometown for the past five years, bringing international names such as Courtney Pine, Snake Davis, Tommy Smith, the Apollo Saxophone Quartet - and now John Harle.

"I wanted to bring John to perform at the Coro because he has been one of my biggest musical inspirations," explained Jess. "He's an incredible musician who has been a real pioneer of classical saxophone and I am very excited about seeing him perform.

"I've been lucky enough to work with John on my technique over the past year.

"Not only is he a fantastic saxophonist, he's also an extremely successful composer and the knowledge and understanding he has of music is quite extraordinary."

Jess will join John onstage to perform Berlin Tango: "John wrote this for me to premiere at the World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg. To perform with one of my idols will be quite a surreal experience."

Also sharing the Coro stage with John - whose also director and producer at Sospiro Records - will be pianist Steve Lodder described by the Guardian as "an improviser of originality and a great musical thinker of erudition and depth."
