Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 1568 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle comprising of 602 Store Cattle, Store Bulls and Stirks, an entry of 568 Spring Born Suckled calves for the 2nd Special Sale, 284 Calves and 178 Dairy Cattle forward for the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day.

Borderway was buzzing with activity as 197 vendors offered cattle while 180 active buyers ensured another tremendous days trading for all concerned.

STORE CATTLE – A very mixed show of 336 store cattle were forward with all classes meeting a fantastic demand. The sale topped at £1345 for a marvellous Charolais x bullock from Messrs TB Stamper & Son, Rose Farm, Cockermouth which headed up an outstanding run of 8 which averaged £1286.88. Heifers saw a high of £1190 for a British Blue consigned by JH & RM Lloyd, Fishergill, Wigton.

CALVES

Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their weekly sale of calves seeing the weather putting a few vendors on hold but a strong ring side of purchasers were in attendance.  284 calves were forward with the sale dominated by dairy bred calves with all classes well bid for.  Topping the trade on the day was a Limousin x bull from Messrs Tait & Son, Bulls Hill, Allendale, peaking at £470.  It was evident there was a strong demand for beef bred bulls as they were easily sold.

STORE SHEEP

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store sheep.

The smaller show seemed to strengthen the day’s trade seeing all lambs in great demand.

Topping the day were a tremendous pen of 8 Beltex lambs from Messrs Steel of Lesson Hall, Wigton, achieving £67 per head. Smaller and rougher type lambs sold with ease seeing all continental lambs selling for no less than the high forties.

Many more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor.

PRIMESTOCK SALE

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock with one of the largest shows of 635 cattle forward.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE: A very large show of 478 cast cows were presented to the usual large ring side of over twenty buyers with 50 accounts active.

M/s Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top priced Limousin cross cow selling for 171.5p to Les Fell. M/s Storey, Woodhead Farm sold the top overall priced Limousin cross cow selling for 779kg at 168.5p totalling £1312 bought by Mr Owain Llyr. M/s Reed, The Knarr sold a British Blue cross cow selling for 165.5p to again Mr Llyr. M/s Armstrong, Shankfield Head run of Limousin cross cows topped at 158.5p to Mr Owain Llyr. Mr David Holliday, Rashfield sold the top priced Charolais cow selling for 908kg at 143.5p totalling £1302 to Andrew Hawley.

Wragmire Farms run of Holstein cross cows and heifers topped at 715kg, 141.5p, totalling £1011 to Mr Steven Bowes with others selling to 140.5p and 136.5p purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Les Fell. M/s Storey, Blackrigg run of Holstein cross cows topped at 134.5p to Mr Kirkpatrick. M/s Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold a Holstein cross for 130.5p to Les Fell. M/s Morley also sold the top overall priced Holstein cross cow selling for 938kg, 109.5p at £1027 purchased by Dawn Meats.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 102 prime bulls forward with most classes slightly easier on the week. Top overall was a Charolais bull from M/s Carruthers, Glenzierfoot, Canonbie selling to £1646.02. M/s Philips, Mains of Minnydow, Castle Douglas sold top Limousin to £1622.678. M/s Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold top overall Simmental achieving £1575.86. Top pence per kilo was attained by M/s Hall, Ainstable hall, Carlisle who received 217.5p twice, firstly for Limousin cross then secondly for a British Blue.

Top Black and White was a Holstein from M/s Lyall, North Scales, Brampton selling to £1094.45 and pence per kilo was 160.5p for a British Friesian from M/s Nelson, Braithwaite Hall, Carlisle.

PRIME CATTLE: A similar entry of 57 prime steers and heifers forward, selling to a very similar trade to that of last week. Top overall was a super Limousin cross steer from M/s Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle selling to £1660.85. M/s Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold the top priced British Blue for £1617.83. The top heifer was a quality Charolais cross form M/s Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle selling to £1494.50. All of the above were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle top overall pence per kilo was a very stylish Limousin cross steer from M/s Dodd, West View, Penrith achieving 231.5p and purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a client. M/s Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport topped the heifer section at 227.5p for a Limousin and sold to M/s Mullholand, The Butchers, Carlisle

PRIME LAMBS: The weekly sale of prime lambs was held and despite adverse weather conditions over the weekend, a pleasing show of 2271 head were forward. Those who braved the conditions were rewarded with a much sharper trade and an SQQ of 163.55p was achieved.

Topping the sale at £83.80 was M/s Bell, High Fell Farm with Dutch Texel lambs which sold to Mr Andrew Dawson. The top pence per kilo was achieved twice at 212.5p firstly for Dutch Texels lambs form M/s Bell, Low Houses and also a pen of five Beltex lambs from M/s Reay & Sons, West Moor Houses.

Mule lambs were better to sell to a top of 151.9p for a pen of nineteen from M/s Grieve of Whiteside. Mules also achieved £68.80 from M/s Lawson, Kirkland Green and M/s Wigham, Coldshields.
