With regards to the threat to Arnside Fire Station (Gazette, November 19, 'Say 'no' to cuts') the outbreak of fire dose not necessarily have to lead to loss of life in order to wreck havoc on homes or businesses. There are other things by which to judge the need for firemen and engines in an area.
By focusing our attention on lives lost – and so far we have the Fire Service to thank that the numbers have fallen – the wider issues are being hidden.
The Fire Service has always been essential to our country and with the world in the state it is now, who knows how things will develop in the future?
At the very least our fire station might be moth-balled pending decisions before the proposed suggestions are rushed through. If the present land is lost there is no other central area in Arnside in which to build the station.
It beggars belief that it is even being considered!
