As a senior citizen who is naive about modern technology, I was surprised to be shown my letter (Letters, November 12, 'A Hallowe'en nuisance') published on your website and even more surprised to note the reaction.

On the evening of October 31 we had already had another ring on the doorbell before the young man came along. We did not answer and the caller went away without doing any damage. What is wrong about that?

To his credit the young man concerned did not do any real damage. Perhaps he will walk past in the spring to see the bulbs have grown.

Is it so wrong to say 'No thank you' to Trick or Treat and Hallowe'en? It sounds polite to me. Supposing it had read 'No solar heating salesmen, thank you'. Would that have caused comment?

It is strange that people are offended by the sentence 'Jesus is the light of the World'. Would they be offended if the name of a modern celebrity, for example Lady Ga Ga, or a fictional one like Cinderella, was put in instead? If Jesus does not exist, he cannot influence anyone, so why the reaction?

I have not been indoctrinated by anyone. When I was about eight years old, in the days before technology, I found a Bible and often enjoyed reading the Old Testament stories along with the Greek and Roman legends, the brothers Grimm, Hans Anderson, Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton.

Eventually, I moved on to more adult books but never gave up the Bible. As a teenager I became a Christian and have never regretted doing so.

It would be interesting to see if there is more reaction to the name of someone who apparently does not exist.
