A MEMORIAL bench is to be dedicated to Carnforth's late and much-loved town crier, Frank Barton, on Lancashire Day tomorrow (Friday, November 27).
Town crier Barry McQueen is coming from Blackpool to do a cry at 3pm when the seat in the War Memorial Gardens will be formally dedicated to Cllr Barton, who died a year ago, aged 83.
As a devoted servant of Carnforth, his many roles included designing, building and maintaining the War Memorial Gardens; and serving as treasurer of Carnforth Railway Club and Carnforth and District Chamber of Trade. He was mayor in 2004 and declined a second term so he could devote himself to other activities promoting the town.
As a founder member of the Carnforth and District Twinning Association, Cllr Barton visited twin town Sailly-sur-la-Lys on many occasions, when he invariably wore his town crier's regalia.
Lancashire Day marks the date in 1295 when the county sent its first representatives to Parliament.
