A TEENAGER battling the effects of a brain tumour has received an electronic wheelchair thanks to donations of more than £10,000.

Friends and family of Amy Stockill started fundraising just six months ago to buy the life-changing wheelchair which will give the 13-year-old her freedom.

"She's really chuffed and thankful to everyone," said Amy's mum Lisa Stockill. "It will give her independence so she can go to the shops with her friends and do those things that we take for granted."

Amy, of Sedgefield, was diagnosed with a Medulloblastoma brain tumour two years ago and underwent a lifesaving 12-hour operation at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary to remove it.

Despite months of intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and a further operation to remove a build up of fluid in her brain earlier this year, she continues to suffer from mobility problems and has relied on a manual wheelchair which she has struggled to operate.

With her new adaptable wheelchair, Amy can carry out everyday tasks.

"With the electric wheelchair she can get into the fridge and kitchen cupboards," added Ms Stockill. "When she got it it was the lead up to Christmas and there was bad weather so she's dying to get out and about in it, although she needs a bit of practice first."

Tipping the Go Fund Me fundraising page over the £10,000 target was a fashion show at the town's Parish Hall held this month.

A Polar Express-themed evening titled Believe saw ten Sedgefield Slimming World members - who have lost 545lbs between them - brave the catwalk, modelling a collection from Jayne Ladies Boutique.

Fishburn Youth Dance and Drama tap dance troupe and ballroom dancers provided entertainment at the celebration attended by Amy and organised by slimming group consultant Tanya Evans and boutique owner Elena Degnan.

Although Amy has finally got her electronic wheelchair, she is unable to use it to its full potential and the family is continuing to raise cash so they can adapt their home to suit Amy's needs.

"The money will help renovate the house and give Amy access to the garden as she can't go into it at the moment and play with the dog," said Lisa, a former slimming group member.

"We will also widen the front door and occupational therapists are working with us to find out what can be done."

She added that she would like to thank everyone who has donated on behalf of herself and her husband Frank.
