A MAN who stripped naked and urinated on bread in a County Durham grocery shop has been tagged.

Father-of-two Adam James Potts was handed a curfew for causing chaos in The Co-operative Food store.

Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (December 30) heard the defendant, of Arthur Terrace, Stanley, went into the store in Crook at about 9pm on December 6 where he appeared to be intoxicated.

Alison Howey, prosecuting, said he was seen on CCTV approaching the bread display where he urinated on the products and shelves - ruining £163 worth of stock.

The 33-year-old then pulled items off the shelves and kicked the fixtures and fitting, making his way around the shop shouting and swearing.

Magistrates were told Potts removed all his clothes and "played with his genitals" before smashing bottles.

Members of staff left the shop floor and used the tannoy to evacuate the store.

Ms Howey said as the defendant was led out by police he headbutted one of the officers.

Potts, whose behaviour was described as "erratic and volatile", told officers he had drunk about four pints of Fosters and two glasses of Champagne but couldn't explain what had happened.

He agreed the people in the shop would have been terrified.

In mitigation, Sam Brewster said the defendant was a family man who cared for his five-year-old daughter who has cystic fibrosis.

Mr Brewster told the court Potts had been out with friends when the next thing he remembered was waking up in a police cell.

He added the defendant was ashamed and extremely embarrassed.

Potts pleaded guilty to an act of outraging public decency, criminal damage, and assaulting a constable in his duty.

He was given a four week curfew from 8pm to 6am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and was ordered to pay £278.98 to the shop and £75 to the police officer he assaulted.
