FORGET firemen, cute animals and football teams, one must have calendar for 2016 which counts down the year with pictures - of drain covers.

The Drainspotter's 2016 calendar is the creation of Lake District lengthsman Archie Workman, of Penny Bridge, near Greenodd.

The 60-year-old, who is employed by Colton Parish Council, near Coniston, said: "I produced 100 but they are nearly all sold out so I might make some more.

"They are all drain covers found in 2015 which I have researched. Four different ones were from Ulverston. In 2015 the town is the LED capital of the world, it seems it was once the drain cover capital of the world.

"The calendar has gone to America, New Zealand and the Isle of Man. It is amazing."

He has even sent one to Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn - a self-confessed drain spotter.

Archie first shot to fame for his drain spotting hobby after he produced a 2014 calendar for Colton Parish Council.

He was voted the Dullest Man in Cumbria and inducted into the Dull Mens Club.

He then appeared as Mr March in the club's 2015 calendar - but with no calendar produced this year, he decided to create his own again detailing some of the favourite drains he discovered last year.

He is now a public speaker on the topic and his talk - My Life in the Gutter - has become a hit across the county, a further afield.

He said: "I am absolutely over the moon with the last few years. People don't look down at the street furniture but after listening to me they do.

"It's a nice career for me. I never knew that my interest in something so mundane could propel me to stardom like it has."

The calendar costs £8 and money received will be spent on equipment to allow Archie to carry on clearing the drains of the parish.

The past few weeks have been a busy period for Archie given the recent heavy rainfall.

He said the drains need to be updated, adding: "Once the water hits our towns and villages it needs to get away quickly. We are living in 2015 with a Victorian drainage system that should have pumps in them."

He said he may produce more to raise money for Cumbrian flood victims.

The calendar is available to buy by contacting Archie on Twitter @TheGamechanger or at The Britannia Inn, Penny Bridge or at The Ship Inn at Greenodd.
