Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 923 cattle at the first sale of the year comprising of 392 Store Cattle and Weaners, 79 at the monthly Border Dairy day and 452 Calves. Trade on the whole was good throughout.

STORE CATTLE – A decent entry of 186 head of store cattle were presented to a very large turnout of buyers at Borderway’s first sale of the year. Trade was very good with all classes well bid for. Top overall was a superb Simmental cross steer from Messrs Bell of Westnewton Hall, Wigton achieving £1190. Heifers sold to £1105 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington of West Whitrigg, Wigton, and finally black and whites sold to £840 for Friesians from Messrs Shepherd of Drigg Moorside, Holmrook.

Harrison & Hetherington Limited held their first sale of the year for calves  with a fantastic entry of 452 forward which is one of the largest seen for some time.  Younger beef calves were a fantastic trade, however stronger calves would be cheaper than the previous months.  Top price of £440 for a pair of British Blue Calves from Messrs Bell, Torpenhow Hall, Wigton.  A plainer show of Black and White calves would be slightly cheaper, however a large ringside of buyers ensured that they were competively bid for.

STORE SHEEP – A small but quality show of hoggs were on offer at the first sale of the year, whereby all sheep were keenly bid for throughout. Zwartbles cross hoggs consigned by Messrs Elliot of Glen Hush peaked at £72 per head.

With new buyers in attendance eager to buy, more hoggs are required to fulfil demand.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of

Primestock. A large show of 350 cast cows, bulls & prime cattle were presented to an ever increasing ring side of buyers.

CAST COWS, BULLS & OTM CATTLE : A very mixed show of 225 cast cows were presented to the days buyers which ensured all classes were 10-15p up on the week with buyers leaving short of cows. Mr Hall, Ainstable Hall run of outstanding Limousin cows topped at 766kg at 166.5p totalling £1275 purchased by Cleveland Meat. M/s Hall also sold a Limousin for 159.5p to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. M/s Graham & Partner’s, Greenshields, Biggar two Limousin cows topped at 799kg at 155.5p totalling £1242 to Mr Sean McGimpsey.

Mr Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse Dairy Limousin x cows topped at 157.5p purchased by Cleveland Meats and top overall priced Limousin x cow sold for 807kg at 152.5p rounding £1230 bought by Woolley Bros, Ms Suddes & Sons, South Farm, Durham run of Limousin cows topped at 157.5p bought by Pickstocks.

M/s Horsley of Woodhouse Farm Holstein x cows topped at 684kg at 131.5p totalling £899 selling to Pickstocks. PRIME BULLS: A small entry of 48 prime bulls forward selling to a very similar rate to that of previous weeks. Top overall of £1422.65 which was achieved by M/s Armour, Milton, Moffat selling an Aberdeen Angus to Mr Les Fell. The same vendor also sold another to £1408.90. Simmentals peaked at £1385.72 from M/s Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. Black and Whites topped at £948.50 for a Holstein Friesian again from M/s Armour, Milton Farm more weight and quality could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.

PRIME CATTLE: A very good entry of 58 prime steers and heifers forward at the first sale of 2016. Trade looked good and all classes were very well bid for. Top of £1617.34 was attained by M/s Crichton of Loughrigg, Egremont which was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle for his Limousin cross steer, M/s Bowe, Bothel Parks Wigton sold another to £1586.25. Top pence per kilo steer of 223.5p was received by M/s Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle for their Limousin x. M/s Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold the top heifer receiving 223.5p at £1453.04 with another Limousin selling to £1452.72 with the first heifer being purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and the second purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.

PRIME HOGGS: A smaller show of prime hoggs saw heavier weight slightly less on the week but lighter weights much dearer with an SQQ of 182.1p being achieved. Topping the sale at £94 was a single Dutch Texel x lamb from M/s Laird, Unity which sold to Mr A Dawson. Top pence per kilo was 232.5p for a very smart Texel x lamb from M/s Smith-Jackson, High Town.

Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of crop.

Round bales of wheat straw sold to £61 per tonne, and mini hestons to £66, £60 and £58 per tonne. Round bales of Barley straw sold to £18, £16 and £15 per bale.

BORDERWAY MONTHLY DAIRY DAY   

The first Borderway Monthly Dairy Day in 2016 had 79 dairy cattle on offer comprising of freshly calved cows & heifers and in-calf heifers. Trade topped at £1600 to average £1051 per life for a quality offering and even though the industry is currently in the midst of a relentless downturn the animals sold looked very good value for money. 

Top price went to The Williamson family from The Howes, near Appleby for a third calve British Friesian cow only ten days fresh selling for £1600.

The Mattinson family from Rosewain Farm, Wigton sold four outstanding Ayrshire heifers topping at £1250 twice to average £1150.

Holstein heifers topped at £1350 for a special uddered heifer from the Firm of Andrew Harvey, Drum Farm, Dumfries.  They also topped the Holstein cow trade at £1280 for a second calve cow giving 48kgs. 

Paul Harrison Breckney Hill Farm, Heddon on the Wall sold three excellent heifers to average £1260 topping at £1300 for a Glauco daughter bred from an Excellent dam.
