KIRKBY STEPHEN: Tuesday, January 12

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, where an entry of 2,091 sheep were forward consisting of 1,635 prime hoggs and 456 Cast ewes and rams.

Topping the sale at £115.80 was a Beltex Hogg from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Kirkby Stephen which was bought by Mr S Stoddart.

Topping at 273.8p/kg was a pen of Beltex hoggs also consigned by Messrs Buckle which were purchased by Vivers Scotlamb Ltd. All classes of sheep were dearer on the week once again with an increased ringside of buyers present looking for all types of sheep.

Smart export weighted hoggs were particularly good to sell, with the best of these regularly exceeding 240-270p/kg and the £100 mark!

Heavy hoggs were also still very good to sell and in demand.

Kirkby Stephen Store Cattle

Harrison & Hetherington, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their opening January prize show and sale of store cattle, where a catalogued entry of 682 cattle were on offer.

Topping the sale at £1615 was a Limousin cross heifer consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside.

The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by I’Ansons of Masham and the judging was carried out by local beef and sheep farmer, Mr Geoff Bell, Far Broom, Appleby, who had an exceptional show of cattle to judge.  Mr Bell awarded the overall championship to a 15 month old Limousin cross heifer from Richard Tiplady, Littlebeck, Richmond which went on to sell for £1145.

A special prize was give by Mole Valley Farmers to the Highest price beast feed on their feed, this was award to a Limousin cross Heifer which was sold for £1615 and was consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm.

Over 45 active buyers were in attendance.  The best quality sorts especially well bred heifers were still good to sell with plenty of customers looking to purchases these types.  The plainer more commercial cattle were in keeping with the recent downturn in the prime cattle trade, but vendors were still leaving the ring thankful for their trades taking into account the current prime returns.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen mart held their fortnightly sale of Cast & OTM cattle on Monday, where an entry of 52 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £1198.93 was a Cast Limousin Bull from Messrs Patterson, Coupland Beck Farm, Appleby which was bought by Mr Alan Jarvis. 

Topping at 184.5p/kg was a Limousin cow from Forest Hall Farm, Selside, Kendal which was purchased by Mr David Barker.

All classes of cast and OTM cattle were much sharper than recent sales both prior and since the Christmas break, with many types being 10-15p/kg dearer.  An excellent overall sale average of 108.01p/kg was achieved and many more could have been sold, with our next sale being on Monday 25th January.
