THE licensee of a South Lakeland pub has called last orders on his career after more than 35 years in the industry.

For regulars of the Sun Inn in Ulverston, it may take a while to get used to seeing David Mackenzie on the customer's side of the bar, but he'll no longer be pulling pints having retired after 27 years as the licence holder at the premises.

His career running pubs goes even further back than that though, starting when he took charge at the Steelworks Hotel in Barrow.

After so long in the industry, Mr Mackenzie is now looking forward to spending some more time with his family – especially his wife Carol and their five grandchildren.

Mr Mackenzie has seen a lot of changes in pub culture during his time, but he believes the biggest shift has been the way in which people socialise.

He said: "We always used to be very busy but there's not much trade around during the day now.

"People tend to buy from the off licences and they drink at home at then come out later, that's the major change."

Mr Mackenzie's son Scott and his wife Kirsty will be taking over the running of the Sun Inn, which is currently having some refurbishment work done to it which is expected to be completed in February.
