CARLISLE - Monday 1st February 2016. At Borderway Mart Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep. Store Sheep - a larger show of store sheep were forward to an increased ringside of buyers, ensuring all lots were keenly bid for. Topping the trade was Messrs Dunn of Coach and Horses, Langrigg, Wigton, realising £76 per head with Texels, this same good home also sold a pen of strong Beltex cross lambs to £73.50. The run of store hoggs went on to average £57.04 with the large proportion of the sale being Swaledale and Herdwicks. Topping the Fell bred section was a brilliant run of 51 hoggs from Messrs Coulthard of Fellside Farm, Wigton, which later went on to averaged £53.42 and topped the Swaledale section at £60 per head.

At Borderway Mart on Monday 1st February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 503 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward. A larger show of 385 cast cows and stock bulls were presented to one of the largest ringside of buyers in the UK, ensuring trade being as dear as ever for all classes. Messrs Wilson of Wood Farm sold a pure Limousin cow selling for 755kg, 187.5ppk or £1415 and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Johnson of West Wharmley sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 813kg, 178.5ppk or £1451 and was purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley of Woodhall sold the top priced British Blue cross cow which sold to 170.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Rogerson of Maison Gill sold two Blonde cross cows to 847kg, 166.5ppk or £1410, and to 803kg, 160.5ppk or £1288, both of which were purchased by Owain Llyr. A larger number of dairy bred cows were being presented to a keen ringside of buyers which ensured all classes were a good trade. Messrs Wilson of Hardrigg Hall sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer, which sold for 667kg, 174.5ppk or £1163 and was purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wilson of Woodside run of Holstein cross cows topped at 793kg, 142.5ppk or £1130 and was purchased by Steven Bowes. Messrs Shepherd of Crownstone Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 145.5ppk and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Wilson of Woodside also sold a Holstein cross for 138.5ppk to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Harrison & Sons of Down Hall sold a Holstein cross for 137.5ppk to Steven Bowes. Messrs Armstrong & Sons of Broomhills sold a Limousin stock bull for 135.5ppk and was purchased by Pickstocks. Messrs Dart & Son of Flothers, Slaley sold top overall priced Limousin stock bull, which sold to 1007kg, 134.5ppk or £1354 to Cleveland Meats.

PRIME BULLS- a good entry of 83 prime bulls were forward, whereby all classes were very easily sold, especially the better flashed sorts. Top overall was a Simmental from Messrs Goldie of Newbie Mains, Annan achieving £1713.39. British Blues sold to £1607.54 from Messrs Hunter of Upper Brydekirk, Annan. Messrs Horn of Lower Griseburn topped the Limousin trade peaking at £1599.99. Top pence per kilo of 211.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Hall of Ainstable Hall, Carlisle with their British Blue cross and secondly a Limousin from Messrs Mitchell of Mirkbooths, Carlisle. Black and whites peaked at £1255.14 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Clark of the Whins Lockerbie. The same vendor also sold top priced British Friesian to £1225.36 and finally Messrs Clark also takes home top overall pence per kilo of 164.5ppk. More could have been easily sold.

PRIME CATTLE - a very good entry of 36 prime steers and heifers were forward, with all classes also very easily sold. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Cape of Kirkland Guards, Wigton selling to £1587.30. Messrs Bowe of Bothel Parks, Wigton sold top price British Blue cross to £1545.88 and Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg, Egremont sold the top Charolais cross to £1531.82. Heifers peaked at £1506.32 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton of Loughrigg who also sold to top Charolais cross, achieving £1486.80, all of the above were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. More could have been easily sold.

PRIME HOGGS: The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw a smaller entry of 2150 forward for sale. Handy weight sheep were good to sell and averaged at 190.2p SQQ. Topping the sale both per kilo and per head was Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill with an outstanding Texel cross hogg which sold for £111.50, 242.4p to Mr Robert Skelton. Many more could have been sold to advantage.
