A LAKE District mine is to be the unusual venue for two horror film screenings next month.

Honister Slate Mine, near Keswick, will be staging two special screenings of a British horror classic deep inside a Lake District mountain in March.

It will be first time a full-length film has been shown down the mine and follows the success of an event in September when a full-piece orchestra stage a one-off concert inside the aptly named Fiddler’s Cavern.

Now, up to 100 people will have the chance to see the underground screenings of 2005 cult film The Descent on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March.

Ominously, the film follows the fortunes of six women trapped in an underground cave system while being hunted by horrifying creatures.

England’s largest working slate mine will be enlisting the help of some local street theatre artistes who will throw in a few surprises to keep the audience on their toes. Mulled wine, including a non-alcoholic version, will also be served to help steady the nerves.

Adam Hocking, marketing manager at Honister Slate Mine, said: "We always try to do something unique and these two horror evenings are something completely new for Honister.

"What better place to experience the full dramatic impact of a spine-tingling horror film than deep underground, in this atmospheric – almost other-worldly – space."
