PANCAKE racers from youngsters to veterans enjoyed a flipping wonderful time at Troutbeck's traditional Shrove Tuesday event.

Town crier Tony Legge donned his tricorn hat, green coat and bell to start the proceedings, and mayor of Troutbeck Nick Mowbray awarded prizes for boys, girls, men, women and veterans. They included the Rosemary Hopwood Trophy for hotel race winners Limefitt Holiday Park.

As Mr Legge explained, the cup was named in memory of the late Rosemary Hopwood, who founded the pancake races along with fellow villagers as a Millennium project.

"She was a lovely lady," said Mr Legge, who is town crier in his home town, Abingdon, and has had a holiday home in Troutbeck with his wife, Lesley, for 25 years.

Mr Legge described the pancake races as a wonderful community gathering, where everybody "chipped in" to provide pancakes, buttered hot cross buns, home-made cheese scones and generous prizes.

Also taking part in the hotel race were the Holbeck Ghyll, the Mortal Man Inn and Broadoaks Country House Hotel.

Previous winner the Queen's Head Hotel remains shut after a fire in summer 2014.
