AN EMPTY Kendal workshop - described as an "uncomfortable end stop to the 19th century terraced housing" on Union Street - has been earmarked for conversion.

Alwyn Clancy, of A&N Enterprises, Kendal, wants to change the use of the light industrial unit to five new dwellings.

In planning documents, the late 20th century property is described as an "anomaly" and an "industrial island in the centre of a wholly residential area".

It was formerly home to Kendal Upholsters, which has since relocated to the town's Dockray Hall Industrial Estate.

Mr Clancy plans to convert the unit into five homes with two or three bedrooms.

To echo the existing houses on Union Street, they would be two-storey with uPVC vertical sash windows. The workshop's metal roof would be replaced with locally quarried slate.

Plans have been lodged with South Lakeland District Council.
